What to Eat??
Quite often, as a raw foodist, I am asked they somewhat complicated question, "What do you eat?" The easiest way to repond is by simply stating that "I eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouts." I keep my food intake vegan, and organic whenever possible. Usually the first reponse to that answer is where do you get your protein???? If eating properly, protein should not be something to have to think about. If anything, some of us may be consuming too much protein. Nuts and seeds are a great source, but I find leafy greens are the way to go. Packed with protein, vitamins, chlorophyll and minerals, what's not to love. Yes, simply from greens!!
Inside the raw food world you will find that people eat quite differently. There are people who include raw meats and dairy, often refered to as the Paleo Diet. Natural Hygenists will stick to whole fruits and vegetables, generally adding no spices, suppliments, or condiments to their diet. High fruit low fat/protein is a great lifestyle for those who are extremely active. Superfoodists include a diet od goji berries, cacao, maca, algaes, bee pollen, herbs and other nutrient dense foods from all over the world. Other people, like our head gardener Alden, eats a diet that all comes from within 100 miles. As you can see, there are many different directions one can go when venturing off into raw food world. I remember the early days of eating raw, I was just trying to get as much raw foods as I could into my body. Whole containers of almond butter, huge portions, big heavy meals at Pure Food an Wine, and topped off with a quart of raw ice cream. Sure, I lost 40+lbs this way, but it is certainly not sustainable.
As they journey into live foods gets deeper, you start to look inward, and really have a close connection with your body. Here you can start to figure out what foods work for your body. In Gabriel Cousen's book Conscious Eating you can take the test to see if you are a slow or fast oxidizer. From this test it helped me realize that my body is fueled more so from carbs than it is protein. This is quality information!!
Starting out my day with raw granola and seed milk will send me off for a nap in a few hours. So ideally, I want to choose fruit for breakfast. A smoothie consisting of fresh fruits and greens with a few tablespoons of maca(Peruvian roots used for endurance and stamina), with power me through the morning and well into the afternoon. Lunch may be a big salad with lots of sprouts, spirulina, cukes, celery, and fresh garden greens. Dinner which i perfer to be light, may be a green juice and a blended soup. This is the ideal way for me to eat. Do I do this religiously? No!! I love food, and I enjoy tasting different creations so I may pick and choose different foods along the way. When I need to perform at my best, i stick to the above basic meal plan. It is important for me to not get too caught up in eating, because it could drive you crazy if you let everything you put into your body be the main focus. My only rules are that foods must be vegan, raw, organic whenever possible, and made with love and good intentions!! Have fun with food. Try a new vegetable. Eat food you dislike, you may find it amazing. Try a new dish. Try a raw dish!! Be creative, share your creations with your loved ones, and get your kids in the kitchen with you. Create community!! Shine your light upon others and be the change you wish to see in the world!!
